This summer, I’m happy to announce that the brilliant Kian Torabian, currently majoring in Bio-Engineering at Stanford and Viewpoint School graduate, is available for independent tutoring with Ivy Insiders and Revolution Prep, a college prep program for middle school and high school students. His many academic accolades include winner of the prestigious Arthur B. O’Leary Award, member of the Cum Laude Society and National Merit Scholar. Kian has chosen to work with Ivy Insiders and Revolution Prep because they have an excellent and proven record in dramatically improving students’ test scores. They also provide expert teacher training and year-round student services so Kian’s students will have continuous access to test prep resources and tutoring throughout the year, even after Kian is back in college. A major plus for your children.

His main focus will be helping your high school sophomores and juniors prepare for their SAT, SAT II and ACT exams as well as helping all high school students with a variety of AP courses. He will also be working with middle school students to help improve their understanding of core subjects.

Kian spent his first through 12th grades at Viewpoint and understands the academic requirements and inherent pressures as well as the expectations of the schools and colleges. Kian is a gentle, kind young man with a great love for teaching and learning and has worked patiently over the years with his students to help them improve their academics in a fun and relaxed environment. Word in your ear, Kian’s schedule gets very busy so it’s best to contact him soon!

Fun Run in Calabasas

Now here’s a great recipe for a perfect holiday! Every July 4, the Calabasas Park Homeowner’s Association and City of Calabasas holds the Lakeside Fun Run around the beautiful Calabasas lake. There are 4, 2 and 1/2 mile runs and walks with multiple age groups and a wonderful pancake breakfast. It’s a great way to start the day, get some exercise and make a preemptive strike at the inevitable calorific overload of the day’s festivities. The kids can let off some steam in a safe and friendly environment and you don’t have to make breakfast for the family! It’s also a lovely informal way to meet neighbors and make friends with other active people in the area. The 4 mile and 2 mile runs and walks wind around the lake, which is absolutely beautiful and not normally open to the public and it’s pretty flat, so its perfect for the beginner runner or someone new to racing.  No need to worry if your not ‘a runner’- it’s open to anyone who’s up for some fun! You can either register early by downloading the form or contacting Dan Huncke at 818.222.2782 or just show up and register there! Starts at 7.45 am. Have a wonderful July 4!

Cocoa Mulch Harmful to Pets

Warning for Pet Owners!cocoa mulch

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased
Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it
smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their
dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured
a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she
eats something new but wasn’t acting lethargic in any way. The  next day,
Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning  walk . Half way through
the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further
investigation on the company’s web site said, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and  cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s, and they claim that “It is true
that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can
suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual
dog). However, 98% of all dogs won’t eat  it.”
*Snopes site gives information on Cocoa Mulch

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and
other Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called
‘Theobromine’. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it
really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths
already occurred in the last 2-3  weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker’s chocolate
which is  toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic
quantities of theobromine,  a xanthine compound  similar in effects to
caffeine and theophylline.  A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden
mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17
hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao
bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.
