Eating from the Sea
Trader Joe’s Roasted Seaweed Snack
By: Karen Lee
If you haven’t tried Trader Joe’s new Roasted Seaweed snack, get over to your local TJ’s. These snacks are so popular, people are literally buying then by the caseload. The Simi Valley store is completely sold out and the only local place I’ve seen them is the Fallbrook store.
Containing pressed seaweed, canola oil, sesame seed oil and sea salt, these 60 calorie packs are a healthy snack you can feel good about munching on at odd hours of the day. The health benefits of seaweed abounds as it is high in essential amino acids, which makes them valuable sources of vegetable protein in a vegetarian or mostly meatless diet.
Like most land vegetables, seaweeds contain vitamins A (beta carotene) and C. Seaweeds are rich in potassium, iron, calcium, iodine and magnesium because these minerals are concentrated in sea water. They are also one of the few vegetable sources of vitamin B-12.

This summer, I’m happy to announce that the brilliant Kian Torabian, currently majoring in Bio-Engineering at Stanford and Viewpoint School graduate, is available for independent tutoring with Ivy Insiders and Revolution Prep, a college prep program for middle school and high school students. His many academic accolades include winner of the prestigious Arthur B. O’Leary Award, member of the Cum Laude Society and National Merit Scholar. Using Sunscreen this Summer
Using sunscreen could accelerate cancer
By: Kenny Melcombe
Sure, you may not get that red, itchy sunburn, but some sunscreens containing Vitamin A are said to actually increase the speed at which cancer develops. Nearly half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer.
With that knowledge, the best sunscreen is a hat and shirt. That way, you won’t worry about whether you may get sunburned or if the sunscreen is actually hurting you. But sometimes you want to feel the sun on your back and that’s when you ought to use EWG’s top rate sunscreen that provide UVA and UVB protection. Typically, these lotions contain either zinc or titanianium minerals to help cut the exposure.

Fun Run in Calabasas
Strap on the trainers this 4th of July
By: Serena Scott Thomas
Now here’s a great recipe for a perfect holiday! Every July 4, the Calabasas Park Homeowner’s Association and City of Calabasas holds the Lakeside Fun Run around the beautiful Calabasas lake. There are 4, 2 and 1/2 mile runs and walks with multiple age groups and a wonderful pancake breakfast. It’s a great way to start the day, get some exercise and make a preemptive strike at the inevitable calorific overload of the day’s festivities. The kids can let off some steam in a safe and friendly environment and you don’t have to make breakfast for the family! It’s also a lovely informal way to meet neighbors and make friends with other active people in the area. The 4 mile and 2 mile runs and walks wind around the lake, which is absolutely beautiful and not normally open to the public and it’s pretty flat, so its perfect for the beginner runner or someone new to racing. No need to worry if your not ‘a runner’- it’s open to anyone who’s up for some fun! You can either register early by downloading the form or contacting Dan Huncke at 818.222.2782 or just show up and register there! Starts at 7.45 am. Have a wonderful July 4!

The nine-student team came out on top with a combined score of 49,951.7 points out of 60,000 points on a variety of topics pertaining to the French Revolution. Jessica Lin of the Conquistadores’ was the highest scorer with 8,645.7 points. The brainy squad is required to play one student from each grade point average category. The categories break down into honors (3.75-4.0), scholastic (3.0-3.74), varsity (up to 2.99).
The championship team consisted of Vivian Cheng, Evan Edmisten, Audrey Goldbaum, Daniel Moreh, Adriana Ureche and Michael Walker. Coaches John Dalsass and Stephanie Franklin helped them achieve their victory.

Cash for Appliances
A reminder blog
By: Kenny Melcombe
This is a follow up blog that reiterates the Cash for Appliance program starting this Thursday, April 29th.
California began a ‘Cash for Appliances’ program on Thursday (Earth Day) and will run through May 23. If you purchase a new energy-efficient appliance and recycle your old one you can get a rebate of $200 for refrigerators, $100 for clothes washers and $50 for room air conditioners. To qualify you must live in California, the purchase, installation and recycling must take place in California. No out-of-state or Internet purchases are eligible.
The new appliances must be rated as energy-efficient by the Energy Star program. Your rebate submission must include a completed and signed application, proof of appliance recycling, a copy of the new appliance sales receipt, a copy of a utility bill and proof of purchase (i.e. UPC label).
No retroactive purchases qualify. The program website provides all the necessary details: www.cash4appliances.org. Rebates are on a first-come, first-serve basis until funds are depleted. This is NOT a tax credit but a rebate from the State of California and can be combined with manufacturer and Southern California Edison rebates.
For other state rebate programs, visit the Southern California Edison website at www.sce.com/RebatesandSavings or www.fypower.org.

Get Shaved Truck
By: Karen Lee
Based off Hawaiian shaved ice, The Get Shaved Truck, has brought the “ice cream truck” to a gourmet level. With a fusion of homemade syrup made from pure cane sugar combined with a multitude of delectable add ons, this is not your average shaved ice. Choose a scoop of 3 ice creams, throw on some sweet red bean past and indulge in the light, fluffy ice.
For those distrusting of themselves, choose from the trucks most popular menu items:
-Monkey Brains: Strawberry and Banana Shaved Ice over Vanilla Ice Cream and topped with Sweetened Condensed Milk
-Root Beer Dream: Root Beer Shaved Ice over Vanilla Ice Cream and topped with Sweetened Condensed Milk -Rockin’ Rainbow: Cherry, Blue Raspberry, Pineapple Shaved Ice over Vanilla Ice Cream.
Get Shaved is also opening brick and mortar shop in early May at 9255 Reseda Blvd. Next to Falafel Palace in Northridge.
Check out their website for locations or Twitter. You’ll often find them following Kogi BBQ.

Cocoa Mulch Harmful to Pets
Warning for Pet Owners!
By: Serena Scott Thomas
Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased
Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it
smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their
dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured
a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she
eats something new but wasn’t acting lethargic in any way. The next day,
Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through
the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.
Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further
investigation on the company’s web site said, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.
Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s, and they claim that “It is true
that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can
suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual
dog). However, 98% of all dogs won’t eat it.”
*Snopes site gives information on Cocoa Mulch
Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and
other Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called
‘Theobromine’. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it
really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths
already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.
Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker’s chocolate
which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic
quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to
caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden
mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17
hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao
bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.
